Bacalhau is my favorite restaurant in Portugal thus far. Though they are on the river their culinary pallet is broad. Something else Portugal is known for is a good steak – something that surprised me.
The restaurant is really cute, small, and very unassuming. You wouldn’t think that this small little place on a small walkway would have an almost gourmet menue. Whether you are inside or outside you have a beautiful view of the Douro river.
It is definitely a nice place to have a little romantic dinner and/or a nice place to wind-down with the homey and reflect on your day or a great place to take a break from the day and have lunch
I had the best steak I’ve had while I was in Europe and maybe the best ever. This steak was so freaking tender, so so so good, and absolutely cooked to perfection. As wonderful as that steak was their scones were seriously to die for. I mean there was a perfect and thick crust around it and so gooey in the middle. It came with butter and jam and I couldn’t get enough. I had a piece of my friends and had to order my own. Everything on their menue perfectly pairs with their wines.
You can also have a whole platter where they bring out the Portuguese delicacies while you’re looking at the
The food is really simple but it’s really good they capture exactly what you’re supposed to eat there are all venture Bells and whistles and you don’t need it the chef does an amazing job with the food
Bacalhau is basically a national fish — Cod. The Portuguese supposedly have a cod recipe for every day of the year lol. I’m not a really big fan of cod because I can have yet to figure out how you actually flavor the fish and the flavor stay with it. But the Portuguese do some nice things with it.
Send It Home
Bacalhau has a great assortment of wine, and of course, a great selection of port wine; they will send it to your house if you are so inclined. The great thing about this option is that you don’t have to worry about weight restrictions and you can continue on your journey without being weighed down by wine or worrying about packing it so it doesn’t break.

You can have the wine, olive oil, cheese, and other Cod snacks from the store sent to your house as well. This is a really cool option. I mean how many times have you gone to a restaurant and wanted to take something home or wanted to eat it again, only to be let down by the reality of the situation.
The food at bacalhau is traditional and wonderful as far as I am concerned. You can’t go wrong should you decide to stop here to eat, drink, or get a few snacks from the store for a picnic. Sitting outside, you will see all of the port wine distilleries which is pretty freaking awesome.
If you have time you should definitely go on a tour. If you are interested in a port wine experience, I went to the Taylor wine house with my friend Marion and had a great time. They played Fado music and everything.
